French’s Trading Post – A Hands-On Children’s Exhibit
Step into history with French’s Trading Post, the John Jay French Museum’s newest interactive children’s exhibit! Inspired by the real trading post John Jay French operated in the 1800s, this exhibit allows young visitors to engage in hands-on play while learning about frontier commerce. Kids can explore a recreated mercantile setting, handle replica goods, and role-play as shopkeepers and customers to experience what trade was like in early Beaumont.
French’s Trading Post is designed to encourage imaginative, play-based learning, making history come alive for our youngest visitors. The exhibit is included with museum admission and is perfect for families, school groups, and homeschoolers looking for an engaging educational experience.
A Kid-Friendly Museum Tour – Step Back in Time
Take a journey to 1845 with our kid-friendly tour of the French Museum! This immersive experience is designed especially for children, allowing them to step into the shoes of the youngest French child for a day. Through interactive storytelling and engaging activities, young visitors will learn about pioneer life, daily chores, and the importance of family roles in the 19th century—all while respecting the historic home and its artifacts.
Our kid-friendly tour is perfect for school field trips, homeschool groups, and families who want to explore history in a fun and engaging way. Tours are available by appointment and during special programming.
Off-Site Group Programming
We offer off-site group programming to public schools, homeschools, and senior centers with our Museum in a Box traveling program. This program brings hands-on activities to groups along with our virtual tour. One of our staff members will guide groups through the virtual tour and offer hands-on activities or learning objects while attendees move through the rooms virtually. Cost ranges from $75 to $150.
