RESCHEDULED Exhibit Opening: “Pressed Pleats and Altered Hems”
August 8 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Join us for the rescheduled reception for “Pressed Pleats and Altered Hems: Findings from the Chambers’ Family Closets”.
How much do our clothes tell others about us? How much can we learn about others through what they choose to wear, purchase, or repair? These are the questions Beaumont Heritage Society attempts to answer with their new exhibit “Pressed Pleats and Altered Hems: Findings from the Chambers’ Family Closets.”
The new exhibit will showcase preservation techniques for the Chambers family clothing, covering accessioning, cataloging, cleaning, and rehousing methods employed by Emma Woods, Beaumont Heritage Society’s 2024 Summer Intern, under the supervision of Collections Manager Jayden Franke. The exhibit highlights the intimate connection between the wearer and their attire and features two distinct outfits alongside an assortment of sewing and garment care essentials purchased at defunct stores. Through these artifacts, guests can learn the ingenuity and personal touch of the Chambers women in their approach to clothing, and about the behind-the-scenes efforts required to maintain and preserve these items for future generations.
About the exhibit, summer intern Emma Woods states, “Clothes tell an important story about the people who wear them. They took care of their clothes by making repairs and alterations, which coincides with the recent rise in sustainability movements. This exhibit showcases just a fraction of their efforts to make the lifespan of their clothes longer they are relatable because the same work that they put in is still the same techniques people use today. People can see a reflection of themselves through the collection when they stop to notice them.”
The reception will take place Thursday, August 8th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and will feature an open house of the first floor of the Chambers House Museum and light refreshments.
The Beaumont Heritage Society is a non-profit, organized to educate and engage the community through Beaumont’s history and heritage for a better future together.
