SUMMARY:Spindletop 125th Anniversary & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Beaumont Heritage Society\, in collaboration with Jefferson County and the Jefferson County Historical Commission\, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday\, January 10th\, 2026\, at 9:30 a.m. to unveil new interpretive panels and commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Spindletop oil boom — the historic event that transformed Beaumont\, Texas\, and reshaped the global energy industry. \nOn January 10\, 1901\, the Spindletop gusher erupted\, launching the modern petroleum era and turning Beaumont into a booming hub of innovation\, opportunity\, and global significance. The newly installed interpretive panels tell the story of that remarkable transformation\, highlighting the people\, technologies\, and lasting impacts that emerged from Spindletop. \nIn Giant Under the Hill: A History of the Spindletop Oil Discovery\, co -author Judith Linsley wrote\, “The Lucas Gusher changed the course of history\, inaugurating a new fuel age. This site will preserve this important story for future generations.” Linsley will be present to remark on the 125th anniversary. \nThe ceremony will take place at Spindletop Park\, where community leaders\, local officials\, historians\, and residents will gather to celebrate one of the most pivotal moments in American industrial history. (Directions at the end of page – searching for the park on maps will bring you to the incorrect location) \nThe interpretive panels feature historical photographs\, firsthand accounts\, and key milestones from the Spindletop era\, creating an engaging and educational experience for the public. They will remain on display year-round and will be accessible at no cost. \nThe ribbon-cutting ceremony is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Step back in time and raise a glass at Heritage Happy Hour on Thursday\, January 15th for an evening of history\, conversation\, and complimentary craft beer and wine in a truly one-of-a-kind setting!\n\n\n\nJoin us at Iron Gate Studios in the Kyle Building for a relaxed\, come-and-go happy hour where the past meets the present. Mingle with fellow history lovers\, explore the space\, and learn more about what Iron Gate Studios offers. Iron Gate features a collective of artists and services\, including a variety of tattooing\, personal training\, photography\, hair stylist\, permanent jewelry\, and more.\n\n\n\nThe Kyle Building stands in the former site of the Kyle Opera House. Built in 1933\, the building provides an example of early Art Deco and is made from black glazed terracotta\, beige limestone\, and aluminum decorative work. Hear from Beaumont Heritage Society’s Collection Manager\, Jayden Franke\, on the history of the Opera House and the building that now stands.\n\n\n\nYou can even stop and get tattooed! Tattoo artists Matthew Mahon and Kelly Cantrell have designed a special flash sheet featuring historical references to Beaumont. Designs will be available on a first-come\, first-serve basis and will be repeatable (flash sheet is at the end of the page).
