SUMMARY:Agatha Babino: A Narrative of the Formerly Enslaved
DESCRIPTION:The Beaumont Heritage Society is honored to host Agatha Babino: A Narrative of the Formerly Enslaved\, a compelling traveling exhibit that explores the life of Agatha Babino\, a formerly enslaved woman living in Southeast Texas. The exhibit will run from August 7 through October 3\, 2025\, and will be available for viewing in Heritage Hall on the grounds of the John Jay French Museum (3025 French Road\, Beaumont\, TX 77706). \nThrough historical documents\, photographs\, and powerful storytelling\, the exhibit highlights Babino’s lived experiences – from her early life in bondage to her resilience and contributions in freedom. As a rare firsthand narrative from a formerly enslaved Black woman\, her story offers valuable insight into a complex past and is an opportunity for meaningful reflection and learning. The exhibit is designed to be engaging and educational for audiences of all ages. \nExhibit viewing is open to the public during regular John Jay French Museum hours: Tuesday–Friday from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Admission is included with the museum’s regular tour fee of $5 per person for ages 4 and older. As part of the Museums for All initiative\, admission is free for up to four visitors per group with a SNAP benefit card and a valid ID. \nThe exhibit will open with a free public reception on Thursday\, August 7\, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the John Jay French Museum. Guests are invited to enjoy refreshments and a Q&A with Dionne Babineaux\, Director of the Museum of Undertold Texas History and the exhibit’s creator\, moderated by scholar and filmmaker Gordon S. Williams\, who will speak on the historical and cultural significance of Babino’s narrative. This special program is generously sponsored by The Center for History and Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast. \nIn addition\, a community program related to the exhibit will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Beaumont on Saturday\, September 13\, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event will offer expanded conversations and programming centered on local Black history and cultural heritage.  \nThe Beaumont Heritage Society extends its deepest thanks to the Museum of Undertold Texas History for bringing this exhibit to Southeast Texas. DESCRIPTION:Join us at 5:00 p.m. for Styles\, Scamps\, and Scandals – a guided walking tour through the heart of historic Downtown Beaumont. This one-of-a-kind experience blends architectural insight and colorful local history into an unforgettable evening stroll. \nOur tour begins promptly at 5 p.m. at a designated downtown meeting spot (provided upon registration)\, where guests will be welcomed by our knowledgeable and entertaining guide\, Katherine Leister. From there\, we’ll wind through Beaumont’s storied streets\, stopping at notable buildings and landmarks to uncover the area’s unique architectural styles—from ornate early 20th-century facades to hidden design details that often go unnoticed. \nAlong the way\, you’ll hear captivating tales of mischief and mayhem involving some of Beaumont’s most notorious figures—charming rogues\, small-town scandals\, and strange connections that once made local headlines. You’ll hear stories featuring locations at Crockett St\, the Tyrrell Historical Library\, Julie Rogers Theatre\, Jefferson Theatre\, the Jefferson County Courthouse\, San Jacinto Building\, and First National Bank Building- among others! \nThe tour lasts approximately 50 minutes and covers about ¾ of a mile\, so comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. DESCRIPTION:As part of the ongoing exhibit Agatha Babino: A Narrative of the Formerly Enslaved\, the Beaumont Heritage Society will host a special community program on Saturday\, September 13\, 2025\, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (780 Porter St.\, Beaumont\, TX 77701). \nThis come-and-go event offers a unique opportunity to reflect on Agatha Babino’s life and legacy in a place of deep personal significance – the very neighborhood where she lived during her time in Beaumont. The event will feature insights from Jessie Davis of Historic Sacred Spaces and Kate Hambright\, Marker Chair of the Jefferson County Historical Commission\, who will present on the history and preservation of Black cemeteries in Beaumont\, an important and often overlooked aspect of local heritage. \n“I strongly feel that the Agatha Babino exhibit coming to Beaumont and having the opportunity to connect with the place where she lived at one time in her life\, Blessed Sacrament Church is powerful\,” says Gordon Williams\, scholar and filmmaker\, “The research that Dionne Babineaux has fostered is bringing a light to the Babino family narrative while enlightening those in the Charlton-Pollard community\, the city of Beaumont\, and Southeast Texas about the historical richness of this area. I sincerely applaud the Beaumont Heritage Society and those who have participated in bringing this exhibit to life in this area.” \nAdmission is free\, and guests are encouraged to drop in at their convenience throughout the program’s duration.  \nThe Beaumont Heritage Society wishes to thank Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for generously hosting this event. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next Heritage Happy Hour on September 18th\, 2025\, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post 33\, 1320 Pennsylvania Ave\, Beaumont\, TX 77701. This special two – for – one Heritage Happy Hour will also feature the Temple to the Brave at Pipkin Park! Enjoy wine and craft beer showcased by Giglio Distributing Co.\, and tour this piece of Beaumont’s past\, present\, and future! \nAdmission: -Free for all Beaumont Heritage Society members -$10 for all non-BHS members 21+ \nShort\, informational talks will be given upon entry to the American Legion and the Temple to the Brave before guests tour the buildings. \n  \nABOUT AMERICAN LEGION POST 33 \nThe American Legion was founded in March 1919 in Paris\, France by returning members of WWI American Expeditionary Forces and subsequently chartered by the 66th U.S. Congress on September 16\, 1919. The organization is based on four pillars: Veteran Affairs and Rehabilitation\, National Security\, Americanism\, and Children and Youth. Beaumont’s American Legion Post 33 was granted its temporary charter on September 5\, 1919 as the 25th American Legion post in the State of Texas and received its permanent charter in 1933. It has since welcomed Veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces. On August 9\, 1948\, American Legion Post 33 purchased the property located at 1320 Pennsylvania Avenue (then known as Riverside Drive) from J. H. Phelan for the sum of $20\,000.00 as their permanent home. Legion members constructed their post themselves. The dedication of the new facility took place on Armistice Day\, Friday\, November 11\, 1949. An interesting feature of the post is a series of large ceramic murals created between 1957 – early 1960s by Post 33 member/renowned Texas muralist Clyde E. Gray\, perhaps best recognized as the founder and operator of Heritage Garden Village and the Pickett House in Woodville. Due to prior water intrusion issues\, the murals are now covered with protective paneling pending restoration. \n  \nABOUT TEMPLE TO THE BRAVE \nLocated at 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue in Pipkin Patriots Park\, the Temple to the Brave is a memorial chapel built in 1931-32 by the Col. George Moffett Chapter\, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution whose original intent was to honor those who died in World War I. The Temple to the Brave was later consecrated to Texas military of all wars\, past and future\, and the hope for world peace upon its opening on October 19\, 1932. Following a restoration of the Temple in 2006-2007\, the memorial was rededicated to \nAmerican military of all wars. The memorial was recently designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission and its nomination to the National Register of Historic Places has also been approved. Filled with war-related artifacts\, the Temple to the Brave is open on patriotic holidays on Memorial Day (Last Monday in May)\, Flag Day (June 14)\, Patriot Day (September 11)\, Veterans Day (November 11) and Pearl Harbor Anniversary (December 7); Museum Madness weekend (October\, annually); and for private tours. \n  \n  \nHeritage Happy Hour is an ongoing outreach program typically held every other month\, with each event highlighting a historical landmark\, time\, exhibit\, or organization\, featuring complimentary craft beer provided by Giglio Distributing Co. (wine and non-alcoholic beverages also available). We believe that by promoting and sharing our local history and its historical significance in a fun and social way\, we can also share and promote the efforts to preserve Beaumont’s historical landscape.
