SUMMARY:Chambers House Museum Historical Marker Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Beaumont Heritage Society will host a Marker Dedication to celebrate the Chambers House Museum receiving a Registered Texas Historic Landmark designation. The dedication will celebrate the 1907 C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers Home\, operated by Beaumont Heritage Society as a Historic House Museum. \nThe Chambers House Museum represents a time in Beaumont when both timber and oil were highly successful industries bringing major growth to the area. The Chambers house stands as an example of what life was like for an upper-middle-class family in a city rapidly changed through two successful industries centered around the natural resources of the area. The museum\, built in 1907 by a local lumberman\, was sold to the Chambers family in 1914. C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers moved into the home with their two young daughters\, Ruth\, 11 and Florence\, 16 months old. Nearly ninety years of family possessions were found in the home during restoration. Not only does the home still stand\, but an enormous number of personal items are contained within telling the story of daily life in a time long past. \nThe event will feature remarks from Jean Moncla with Hancock Whitney Bank\, Kate Hambright\, Marker Chair for the Jefferson County Historical Commission\, and Demi Engman\, Director of Planning and Community Development with the City of Beaumont. \nThe dedication will take place November 9th\, 2024\, at 10 a.m. at the Chambers House Museum located at 2240 Calder Ave. Beaumont\, TX 77701. The event is free to attend. Refreshments will be served after the dedication and the Museum will be open for tours. Parking is located behind the Museum off McFaddin Ave. \nThe Beaumont Heritage Society is a non-profit\, organized to educate and engage the community through Beaumont’s history and heritage for a better future together. For more information\, call (409)832-4010 or visit chambershouse.org.

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED Exhibit Opening: "Pressed Pleats and Altered Hems"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the rescheduled reception for “Pressed Pleats and Altered Hems: Findings from the Chambers’ Family Closets”.\n\nHow much do our clothes tell others about us? How much can we learn about others through what they choose to wear\, purchase\, or repair? These are the questions Beaumont Heritage Society attempts to answer with their new exhibit “Pressed Pleats and Altered Hems: Findings from the Chambers’ Family Closets.”\n\nThe new exhibit will showcase preservation techniques for the Chambers family clothing\, covering accessioning\, cataloging\, cleaning\, and rehousing methods employed by Emma Woods\, Beaumont Heritage Society’s 2024 Summer Intern\, under the supervision of Collections Manager Jayden Franke. The exhibit highlights the intimate connection between the wearer and their attire and features two distinct outfits alongside an assortment of sewing and garment care essentials purchased at defunct stores. Through these artifacts\, guests can learn the ingenuity and personal touch of the Chambers women in their approach to clothing\, and about the behind-the-scenes efforts required to maintain and preserve these items for future generations.\n\nAbout the exhibit\, summer intern Emma Woods states\, “Clothes tell an important story about the people who wear them. They took care of their clothes by making repairs and alterations\, which coincides with the recent rise in sustainability movements. This exhibit showcases just a fraction of their efforts to make the lifespan of their clothes longer they are relatable because the same work that they put in is still the same techniques people use today. People can see a reflection of themselves through the collection when they stop to notice them.”\n\nThe reception will take place Thursday\, August 8th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and will feature an open house of the first floor of the Chambers House Museum and light refreshments.\nThe Beaumont Heritage Society is a non-profit\, organized to educate and engage the community through Beaumont’s history and heritage for a better future together.\n\nFor more information\, call (409)832-4010 or visit beaumontheritage.org

SUMMARY:Heritage Happy Hour at the Jefferson Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next Heritage Happy Hour on May 16th\, 2024 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Jefferson Theatre for our Annual Members Meeting! Enjoy wine and craft beer showcased by Giglio Distributing Co.\, and tour this piece of Beaumont’s history! All are welcome – members only will be able to vote on the board slate.\nAdmission:\n-Free for all Beaumont Heritage Society members\n-$10 for all non-BHS members 21+ \nFrom the Jefferson Theatre website: “The Jefferson Theatre was designed by noted architect Emile Weil and built in 1927 in downtown Beaumont for the Jefferson Amusement Company\, Sol E. Gordon and J. C. Clemmons\, partners\, at a cost of one million dollars. Constructed of the finest materials available at the time\, the Jefferson was a magnificent structure as well as a center for entertainment . . .a Movie Palace. The Beaumont Journal once described it in this manner: “Of striking Old Spanish architecture\, the interior radiates romance and charm in the perfect blending of color\, tone\, architecture\, sculpture\, and fabric and breathes an eloquence of grandeur that is felt quite as much as it is seen.” \nThe Jefferson Theatre opened on Monday\, November 14\, 1927\, with a program including The Jefferson Grand Orchestra conducted by Frank Harris\, the organ played by Alice Richmond\, and the movie “Rose of the Golden West” starring Mary Astor and Gilbert Roland. The theater hosted traveling shows\, vaudevillians\, and drama\, in addition to some of the world’s greatest motion pictures\, including “It’s A Wonderful Life\,” whose 1947 premiere was held at the Jefferson Theatre\, with star James Stewart and director Frank Capra in attendance. The Jefferson Theatre was THE showplace of entertainment for four decades and the pride of the Jefferson Amusement Company\, led in later years by Julius Gordon\, son of Sol Gordon. In addition to the theater’s other dazzling appointments\, a magnificent Robert Morton Wonder Organ\, voiced particularly for the acoustics of the Jefferson\, was installed on a platform that allowed it to rise majestically from the orchestra pit to stage level. The organ’s 778 pipes and many percussive effects produced a variety of sounds rivaling those of an actual orchestra. \nThe Jefferson Theatre was beautifully restored after many decades and celebrated it’s Grand Reopening\, November 5-15\, 2003. Owned and operated by the City of Beaumont\, the theatre has become the cornerstone of entertainment in Downtown. Weekly Classic Movie Nights began in August 2014 and are wildly successful with more than 12\,000 attendees annually. Major concerts and shows in the last year include Pat Benatar\, Bobby Bones\, Russian Grand Ballet\, Travis Tritt\, Rodney Carrington\, and Tracy Byrd.” \nHeritage Happy Hour is an ongoing outreach program typically held every other month\, with each event highlighting a historical landmark\, time\, exhibit\, or organization\, featuring complimentary craft beer provided by Giglio Distributing Co. (wine and non-alcoholic beverages also available). We believe that by promoting and sharing our local history and its historical significance in a fun and social way\, we can also share and promote the efforts to preserve Beaumont’s historical landscape. SUMMARY:By Their Hands: The Lives and History of Domestic Workers at the Chambers’ Family Home
DESCRIPTION:Beaumont Heritage Society’s Chambers House Museum commemorates Black History Month with a brand-new\, permanent exhibit housed in the Museum’s Domestic Employees’ Quarters entitled: “By Their Hands: The Lives and History of Domestic Workers at the Chambers’ Family Home.” This exhibit depicts the living conditions of domestic employees of the Chamber family from 1914 and specifically focuses on the lives and work of Nona Williams\, Fannie Bowie\, and Etta Mack. Panels on the walls of the staff’s quarters share the history of domestic employment in Southeast Texas\, the daily life of those who worked at the Chambers House\, and the history of the structure. “They Will Talk About Us: The Charlton-Pollard Story\,” from Gordon Scott Williams and Lamar University’s KVLU is featured alongside maps of African American communities in the North and South end to inform guests on the life of these communities outside of employment. \n“Though we recognize it is a difficult and often painful history\, we are honored to tell the stories of men and women like Nona Williams\, Fannie Bowie\, and Etta Mack. Their stories and contributions to not only our history here at the Chambers House\, but also to their communities at-large\, deserve recognition and remembrance. Without their work by their hands\, we would likely not have the preserved history we have today at the Museum\,” said Beaumont Heritage Society’s Executive Director\, Shelby Brannan. “We tell these stories not only to reflect on history but to hopefully create better futures together with what we learn. We hope our community will join us.” \nThe exhibit opens February 6th\, 2024\, and can be seen during regular tours and scheduled tour times Tuesday – Friday at 10 a.m.\, 12 p.m.\, and 2 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. \nThe community is invited to an event to commemorate the exhibit on February 10\, 2024\, from 1-3 p.m. Entry for this event is free. Visitors can walk through the first floor of the Chambers House Museum and tour the exhibit space. Community organizations will be present on the lawn and refreshments provided. If you’re interested in attending this event as a community organization\, please contact (409)832-4010. \nThis event promotes Beaumont Heritage Society’s mission to foster a connection to Beaumont’s history and inspire others to value preservation and heritage.

SUMMARY:Heritage Happy Hour - Beaumont Botanical Gardens

Enjoy craft beer showcased by Giglio Distributing Co.\, wine\, and a stroll in beautifully kept gardens. \nThe Beaumont Council of Garden Clubs\, consisting of garden clubs\, plant societies\, and nature-oriented organizations\, was formed on April 12\, 1951\, to obtain and sustain a public garden center.  In 1968 the City of Beaumont set aside 10 acres of land in the historic Tyrrell Park for the Beaumont Council of Garden Clubs to develop. The original Beaumont Garden Center Building was constructed using bricks from the Southern Pacific Railroad Passenger Station and was dedicated on August 20\, 1971. \nAbout Tyrrell Park: In 1923\, Captain W.C. Tyrrell donated 1500 acres to be used as a park. Between November 24\, 1935\, and June 30\, 1941\, the Civilian Conservation Corps Company 845 built the park entrance way\, stables\, roads\, nature trails\, and recreation buildings. Tyrrell Park also served as a prisoner of war camp for German prisoners during World War II. \nAdmission:-Free for all Beaumont Heritage Society members-$10 for all non-BHS members 21+ \nHeritage Happy Hour is an ongoing outreach program typically held every other month\, with each event highlighting a historical landmark\, time\, exhibit\, or organization and features craft beer provided by Giglio Distributing Co. (wine and non-alcoholic beverages also available). We believe that by promoting and sharing our local history and its historical significance in a fun and social way\, we can also share and promote the efforts to preserve Beaumont’s historical landscape.
