Built in 1933\, the building provides an example of early Art Deco and is made from black glazed terracotta\, beige limestone\, and aluminum decorative work. The event will take place at 911 Crockett St. Beaumont\, TX 77701 (on the corner of Crockett and Archie Streets) and is free and open to the public. \n  \nPandit Mehar Chand (May 18\, 1894 – Aug. 22\, 1977) emigrated to the United States during a period when Asian Indians were prohibited from obtaining U.S. citizenship and xenophobia and anti-Hindu religious discrimination were rampant. Upon subsequently settling in Beaumont in 1918 and opening a grocery store on Crockett Street\, his difficulties continued\, including persecution by the Ku Klux Klan and his conviction for interstate conspiracy to sell cigarettes\, for which Chand’s accusers later recanted their testimony. Chand remained under threat of deportation for this crime for many years. He was ultimately pardoned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 26\, 1937. On November 23\, 1949\, Chand finally became a U.S. citizen – and the first Indian-American U.S. citizen – to live in Beaumont. His unassuming modesty\, goodwill toward his neighbors\, and advocacy against racial discrimination had by then long endeared Chand to his adopted community. \n  \nThis historical marker was awarded under the Texas Historical Commission’s competitive statewide under-told marker program\, which seeks to address significant gaps in our state’s geographical and historical narrative. Limited funding is available to the THC for its under-told program and only 15 marker topics are approved annually. The Pandit Mehar Chand marker was the first marker to be approved under this program in Jefferson County. The organization is based on four pillars: Veteran Affairs and Rehabilitation\, National Security\, Americanism\, and Children and Youth. Beaumont’s American Legion Post 33 was granted its temporary charter on September 5\, 1919 as the 25th American Legion post in the State of Texas and received its permanent charter in 1933. It has since welcomed Veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces. On August 9\, 1948\, American Legion Post 33 purchased the property located at 1320 Pennsylvania Avenue (then known as Riverside Drive) from J. H. Phelan for the sum of $20\,000.00 as their permanent home. Legion members constructed their post themselves. The dedication of the new facility took place on Armistice Day\, Friday\, November 11\, 1949. An interesting feature of the post is a series of large ceramic murals created between 1957 – early 1960s by Post 33 member/renowned Texas muralist Clyde E. Gray\, perhaps best recognized as the founder and operator of Heritage Garden Village and the Pickett House in Woodville. Due to prior water intrusion issues\, the murals are now covered with protective paneling pending restoration. \n  \nABOUT TEMPLE TO THE BRAVE \nLocated at 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue in Pipkin Patriots Park\, the Temple to the Brave is a memorial chapel built in 1931-32 by the Col. George Moffett Chapter\, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution whose original intent was to honor those who died in World War I. The Temple to the Brave was later consecrated to Texas military of all wars\, past and future\, and the hope for world peace upon its opening on October 19\, 1932. Following a restoration of the Temple in 2006-2007\, the memorial was rededicated to \nAmerican military of all wars. The memorial was recently designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission and its nomination to the National Register of Historic Places has also been approved. This thought-provoking exhibit explores how childhood play\, social rituals\, and domestic expectations shaped the lives of girls in the early 20th century\, using the lives of Ruth and Florence Chambers as a case study. \nDrawing from the Chambers family’s own collection of toys\, photographs\, and personal items\, the exhibit offers a unique lens into how play was not simply entertainment but a means of preparing young girls for adult roles in society. At its center is a recreated tea party scene\, inviting guests to consider how activities like serving tea\, hosting guests\, and minding manners were more than child’s play — they were rehearsals for womanhood. “Are We Ever Through Playing?” examines the parallels and contrasts between the sisters’ experiences growing up in a rapidly changing world\, while also prompting visitors to reflect on how gender roles continue to be shaped today. \nThe exhibit will open at the Chambers House Museum on Tuesday\, July 22\, 2025\, during regular operating hours. The first recorded burial was made in 1847 when John D. Gilbert was laid to rest. The first recorded burial on the McFaddin plot was William’s son John Andrew McFaddin killed at the battle of Fordoche Louisiana during the Civil War on September 29\, 1863. \nDuring the 1860s another burial area adjacent to the McFaddins was marked for the Odd Fellows Lodge. Then\, shortly after the reconstruction of the South\, William saw the need for another addition to the hill so that other Southeast Texans would have a place to bury their loved ones. He deeded two and a quarter acres of his land that was adjacent to his private graveyard to the town of Beaumont in 1876 and was used in the beginning primarily for Civil War veterans and their families. Many people rest on the hill including another Texas War for Independence veteran\, union soldier\, deputy sheriff of Beaumont killed in the line of duty on September 25\, 1881\, and many victims of the Great Flu Epidemic of 1918. \nIn 1887 some of the prominent citizens of Beaumont gathered together to form a Corporation for benevolent and charitable purposes under the General Laws of the State of Texas. The purpose was ‘to purchase\, improve and subdivide land and grounds for a private cemetery for the citizens of Beaumont and vicinity\, and the future maintenance of the grounds by the sale of lots and otherwise as shall be the By-Laws prescribed.’ The Corporation was to have five Trustees as the Board of Trustees for the first year\, with the five being named as Valintine Wiess\, Edward L. Wilson\, A.S. John\, H.W. Smith\, and John L. Keith. The Corporation issued capital stock in the amount of ten thousand dollars\, divided into four hundred shares of twenty-five dollars each. This Charter application was signed by E.L. Wilson\, A.S John\, and V. Wiess. The Charter was approved by the Texas Secretary of State\, on August 3\, 1887. This immersive journey through the city’s musical and cultural evolution highlights how entertainment shaped and reflected Beaumont’s identity from the 19th century to the mid-20th century. \nWhile not a comprehensive representation of Beaumont’s entire cultural history\, this exhibit provides a view of Beaumont’s cultural and musical landscape from the perspective of the Chambers family. This engaging exhibit delves into the ways economic growth\, religion\, and education shaped Beaumont’s cultural scene. Through the lens of music and entertainment\, visitors will journey from the intimate parlor performances of the 19th century to the grand stages of the Kyle Theatre and Jefferson Theatre in the 20th century. Highlights include an exploration of Beaumont’s early opera houses\, the rise of radio broadcasting\, and the pivotal role of the Spindletop Oil Gusher in expanding entertainment opportunities. The exhibit will showcase shellac and vinyl records from the Chambers Family’s personal collection. Visitors will learn about the evolution of these recording technologies\, from fragile shellac “78s” to revolutionary vinyl LPs that transformed the music industry.  \nThe exhibit will open at the Chambers House Museum on Tuesday\, March 4\, 2025\, during regular operating hours. A free opening reception will take place at the museum (located at 2240 Calder Ave\, Beaumont\, TX 77701) on Thursday\, March 6\, 2025\, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Ms. Franke will be available to discuss the exhibit and answer questions from guests. Complimentary wine (for our 21 and up guests) and cheese will be served. Guests can also visit a pop-up booth by For the Record\, a local music venue and record store. A children’s craft activity\, themed to the exhibit\, will also be available\, ensuring fun for visitors of all ages. The reception is open to the public\, and no registration is required.
