Heritage Happy Hour~Tyrrell Historical Library
February 27 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm| $10.00
Join us for craft beer by Saint Archer Gold showcased by Giglio Distributing Co., wine, and socializing in one of Beaumont’s phenomenal historical assets, the Tyrrell Historical Library for our next Heritage Happy Hour on February 27, 2020 from 5:30-7:30pm! The iconic Tyrrell Historical Library was built in 1903 as the First Baptist Church. Captain W. C. Tyrrell purchased the church in 1923 and donated the building to the city for use as a library. It served as the main public library for the city from 1926 to 1974, when the new main branch library opened. At that point, it became the Tyrrell Historical Library, holding a vast amount of research content including a Texana and genealogical collection. In July of 1979, the Beaumont Heritage Society presented the Tyrrell Historical Library with a bronze marker designating its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1987, the building was in a declining state and restoration of the library was adopted as a high priority. The restored library reopened on July 19, 1990 and continues to have its share of maintenance challenges due to age and from inclement weather events including Tropical Storms Harvey and Imelda. In addition to the Texana and genealogical book collections, the Tyrrell Historical Library contains outstanding archives centering on Southeast Texas. Come out and let the library staff show-off recently completed repairs as they take you on a tour of the gorgeous interior and research collections!
