Camp Lookinback is a fun and educational four-day summer camp held on the grounds of the historic John Jay French museum. Children, ages 6-11, experience another time in Texas history while in a safe and enriching environment. Each day, children will get to perform hands on activities related to the 1800s. Camp Lookinback is fun for both boys and girls!
Registration is required and SPACE IS LIMITED to 30 CHILDREN and filled on a first come first serve basis. Cost per child is $75.00 for Non-Members and $65.00 for BHS Members.
Camp procedures will be impacted by COVID-19. We will be following guidelines recommended by the CDC and state of Texas such as health screenings, temperature checks, and limiting group exposure. After your child is registered, you will receive an email that details a complete list of our guidelines. For more information on camps and COVID-19, click here.
Camp Lookinback 2020 will be held in one session: July 14th-17th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Camp Lookinback is based on a three year rotating curriculum for a new experience each year. Each day consists of three hands-on activities. This year, activities include (subject to change):
CIVIL WAR ADVENTURE: Learn about civil war spies, how to track animals in the wild, and how silhouettes were made!
WORK AND PLAY: Life on the frontier is hard work! Learn to balance work and play with punching tin and frontier games! Then learn why bees were so important in 1845- and why they’re still important today!
IN THE KITCHEN WITH SALLY: In the kitchen, you’ll learn how to make butter and biscuits just like Sally French did! Texas A&M AgriLife Extension will teach you all about rice! Then, you’ll try your hand at making your own soap!
THE TEXAS REVOLUTION: Travel to the blacksmith to see how tools were made and used during the Texas Revolution! Then visit a Texas Revolution traveling trunk show where you’ll fire a replica of the “come and take it” cannon! Time will move forward ten years when you step into the 1845 John Jay French home to get an up-close view of a home on the Texas Frontier.
